Navaratri Day 5 – Goddess Skandamata: Story of Divine Motherhood

The fifth day of Navaratri is dedicated to Goddess Skandamata, the motherly form of the Divine Goddess.

The name Skandamata means “Mother of Skanda.” Skanda, also known as Kartikeya and closely identified with Lord Murugan in Tamil tradition, is the divine warrior and son of Shiva and Parvati.

The Special Story of Goddess Skandamata

According to Hindu tradition, powerful divine intervention was required to defeat destructive forces threatening the world.

Lord Skanda was born with a divine purpose and eventually became the commander of the celestial forces.

As his mother, Goddess Parvati came to be worshipped in the form of Skandamata.

She is commonly depicted carrying young Skanda on her lap while seated upon a lotus, beautifully combining motherly tenderness with divine strength.

Significance of Navaratri Day 5

Skandamata represents unconditional love, protection and compassion.

Her form reminds us that motherhood is not merely tenderness—it also involves the courage to guide, protect and prepare a child to face the world.

Her message is:

True love gives both comfort and strength.

Devotees worship Skandamata seeking peace, family well-being and the loving protection of the Divine Mother.

May Goddess Skandamata bless every family with love, harmony, protection and happiness.
